Located along the shore of Long Island Sound, the town of Darien, Connecticut, sits between the towns of Stamford and Norwalk. A picturesque small town of about 20,000 residents, Darien is recognized for its excellent schools, active churches representing seven denominations, social clubs and civic organizations.
Community involvement is strong in this close-knit town. Cherry Lawn Park features a community garden, where green thumbs of all ages can enjoy cultivating their own plot of land. Also within the park is the Darien Nature Center, featuring live animal habitats, educational programs and workshops, a nature trail, a spring-fed pond and a children's garden. The Darien Arts Center is a major part of the city's cultural life, promoting visual and performing arts through classes, performances and exhibits. Darien's public library is ranked one of the top 10 libraries of its size in the country.For outdoor enthusiasts, there are a number of social clubs for golf, water activities and more. The Wee Burn Country Club and Woodway Country Club both offer attractive beach clubs on the Sound, as well as their golf courses, pro shops and other facilities. Also available are the Country Club of Darien, Tokeneke Beach Club, Noroton Yacht Club, Middlesex Swim Club and Ox Ridge Hunt Club. Public beaches include Pear Tree Point and Weed Beach, with barbecues, playgrounds and paddle tennis courts.
Originally part of Stamford, Darien was incorporated as a town in 1820. The business center developed first by the harbor, but shifted to near the railroad station after the New Haven Railroad Line came through in 1848. Great shopping areas have developed in the former business district, with Goodwives Shopping Plaza, Noroton Heights Shopping Center and a number of shops along Post, Tokeneke and Heights roads. Darien offers a 51-minute express train to New York City.
