Norwalk CT Real Estate

A coastal New England city steeped in more than 350 years of nautical history, Norwalk, Connecticut is bordered by 22 miles of Long Island Sound. Norwalk Harbor, formed where Norwalk River flows into the Sound, is an important center of recreational and commercial boating activity, and one of the largest oyster-producing ports in the nation.

Much of the city's rich past is being preserved and revitalized in the historic SoNo (South Norwalk) waterfront district. With more than 30 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the city began efforts to bring new life to this area in the 1970s. The development of the Maritime Aquarium IMAX Theater has helped SoNo flourish, with more than 500,000 visitors drawn to the aquarium each year. The aquarium features a 110,000-gallon shark tank, seals, river otters, jelly fish and other creatures. Enjoy spectacular IMAX movies on the giant six-story screen. SoNo is now home to an array of shops, restaurants, lounges and more.

Norwalk's thriving arts and cultural community provides diverse educational and recreational opportunities. The annual SoNo Arts Celebration attracts more than 80,000 visitors every August. The Norwalk Museum can be found in the old City Hall building, and the SoNo Switch Tower Museum tells the story of railroad switch operators who worked at the tower. The Stepping Stones Children Museum, ranked one of the top 50 children's museums in the country, provides five galleries of interactive exhibits for children 10 and under. The Norwalk Seaport Association hosts the annual Oyster Festival and promotes the preservation and restoration of the shorefront area, including the Sheffield Lighthouse. The lighthouse, located on Sheffield Island, began active service in 1868. Its grounds are maintained as a museum and preserve. While carefully preserving the past, Norwalk is also a thriving corporate center, with employment in the city almost doubling in the past 20 years. The Merritt 7 Corporate Park offers nearly 4 million square feet of office space, a Metro North train station and a heliport. The area is also fortunate in having state-of-the-art healthcare facilities through the Norwalk Hospital, an active teaching hospital and primary affiliate of Yale University School of Medicine. With a new maternity center, a newborn intensive care unit and comprehensive cancer program, the hospital is one of Norwalk's largest employers.

Norwalk's public schools serve a diverse student body of 11,000 children in 19 schools, with an emphasis on academic standards and parental/community involvement. The city's convenient access to New York City and Westchester County via railroad, Interstate 95 or the Merritt Parkway make it a popular residential community for commuters. Stately older homes in suburban neighborhoods are complemented by new construction, including luxury waterfront homes. A variety of condominiums, lofts and townhomes are also available to accommodate the diversity of lifestyles in the community.

The Rowayton area, an historical harbor village, prospers near the opening of Five-Mile River. It boasts a 56-minute express train to New York City and its quaint seaside charm contributes to Norwalk's growing popularity as a place to live, work and visit.
